Help free sick kenyans held captive in hospitals

by KNH Freedom Project » Wed Jul 31, 2013 4:15 pm

    Hey everyone,

i started the Kenyatta National Hospital Freedom Project when i heard about something deeply disturbing. through a kenyan friend i learned that it was common practice in Kenyan hospitals to hold patients captive when they do not have the money to pay their medical bills. one particularly heart wrenching case, Favour Nasimiyu, caught my attention. this 4 year old girl sustained severe burns on her legs, and was immediately treated. however, her family lacks the resources to pay for her $1300 medical bills, so she's being held captive in the hospital, away from her parents. the fact that things like this can happen in the 21st century appall me and i decided to do something about it.

i started an indiegogo campaign to raise funds to free Favour. Right now the main problem i encounter is that very few people are persuaded of my campaign's legitimacy, despite me having provided more and more proof upon request. i want to start a non-profit that sells shirts and donates 100% of the proceeds to unpaid medical bills in the KNH, but i need to build a little credibility first. this is why i want to free favour before starting the non profit, so there's evidence that the concept works. any advice on how to proceed would be welcome, as well as any donations. thank you all for your help!

Hey Ollie - That's horrible and sick. It's easy to think that the rest of the world is okay when you live in a developed country, but there are some major problems out there.

With regards to the legitimacy of the campaign, for one, I would provide more information than one paragraph and also include a video. It would help if you could also link to a website providing more information about the idea or nonprofit. I would also include more reward tiers.

thanks for your help! i wanted to do a video but my contact in kenya who has been providing me with the pictures said he was threatened by government officials when he tried to bring a video camera in as it "painted a negative picture of the government". i'll look into getting more information, thanks again,
