Announce stretch goals before or after you hit your goal?

    by sbriggman » Mon Oct 06, 2014 6:01 pm

I'd like to get a small discussion going on whether or not you should announce stretch goals from the minute you launch, when you are nearing your goal, or when you've reached your goal.

Personally, I think you should announce them only once you've hit your goal, but you should begin to think of the logistics once you hit the 60% mark (sooner if they are complex). I think the exception to this would be if there is a super compelling stretch goal and you have an established audience and know that you will hit your goal very soon, meaning within the first 3 days. Then, it might make more sense to announce them from the beginning to get people excited about spreading the word about your project to hit them and since you will have a lot of momentum initially, it will help sustain it.

    Thoughts?

I was in a bind with my project (def a rookie mistake). My project has been up 5 days http://kck.st/1CGkLTE The anodizing of the aluminum can be costly if we don't hit minimums or at least come close. Set a funding goal probably to low and then had stretch goals to add the colors (red, blue and green). No one has commented on it but if I had to do it again I would have raised the funding goal and probably added the stretch goals a bit late.

I say have one stretch goal when you launch. Know what the next 2 or 3 could be and add them as you get closer. Makes for great backer updates.
