PR Tips (interview w/ Sal & Matt Lesko)

    by sbriggman » Mon Aug 25, 2014 7:21 pm

    Hey guys,

I did another interview with Matt Lesko where we discussed PR and crowdfunding campaigns. Most of my tips are towards the middle and end of the interview.

Let me know if you find it to be helpful.

Very helpful. It reminded me about press and gave me the right focus and idea of where to look and who to contact for my story-something they would back, they believe in, their readers would be interested in. Thank you!

PS So, I'm planning a countdown and I'll do articles or videos or both up until that date. What do you think the maximum amount of countdown days should be? 30?

This was very informative, I will check out the recommendations at the end. I would be interested in finding the application that lets you know if someone has opened your email. That would be so great. I sent out a lot of press releases last year for a play that I was producing and only one media outlet replied. They turned out to be very important and we had a sold out performance our first night. I always wondered if anyone ever really read our Press release.

    Anyway thanks.

@nixiart - If you scroll down to the "Handling PR and Blogger Outreach" section of this blog post, you can see a few options for free software tools that will let you know if people viewed your email.

Great thanks. I was wondering when should one start sending Press Releases? I'm still editing my video for my documentary so I'm not ready yet. It feels like sending a PR during the campaign is too late, but I don't want to do it too early either. What do you think?

Great question! Press release time is something I have also struggled with. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Ideally, I would send one before during and after (if you are successful). You could also do a blog article and then use the press release to link back to that so that journalists can follow your story over time. I would also try to begin developing a relationship with key journalists now, or at least trying to get some kind of email response. It doesn't have to be about your project. It could be about an article they wrote that you like.

The timing of when to send out a PR also depends on your angle for the story. If your story angle is that you are taking off on Kickstarter, then you would likely need to wait until the end of the first week.
