Kickstarter: What happens after a campaign?

    by taskman » Fri Jan 10, 2014 4:00 am

    Hi

I am trying to figure out what happens right after a campaign is successful on Kickstarter?
How long does Kickstarter take to pay out the money?
How do they pay it out, to a bank account or to your PayPal account?
Do you get a list of backers with e-mail addresses and then you need to ask each backer for their address?
Is there an order tracking system available that you can upload your backers into?
I have seen some companies ask for shipping costs paid after Kickstarter. How is this done?

Not sure what else I can ask, because I don't know what happens after the campaign :)

    Thank you

There is a 14 day window from the completion of your project to when you can withdraw the funds from Amazon Payments (see below)

How do they pay it out, to a bank account or to your PayPal account?
Kickstarter uses Amazon Payments in order to collect money. You would have to sign up for an account which isnt that hard.

Do you get a list of backers with e-mail addresses and then you need to ask each backer for their address?
Kickstarter allows you to send out "surveys." In the surveys you can ask your backers for their email address and collect their information for shipping.

Is there an order tracking system available that you can upload your backers into?
Kickstarter has you covered here as well, they have something called "backer report" which you can use like a spreadsheet that will put your backers in order by category of your choosing, country, pledge amount etc....

I have seen some companies ask for shipping costs paid after Kickstarter. How is this done?
Dont do this, figure out your shipping long in advance, include overseas, make note in your rewards to add 20 dollars or however much it will cost for overseas shipping. Nothing worse then purchasing something then being asked for more money.

There is more on the Kickstarter website, in fact they have a Q&A section titled "After your project ends" http://kck.st/1lMYb4v

    Hi Taskman,
I just finished a Kickstarter projecthttp://kck.st/14xmkB5 and here's what happens.
You can view your funds in your Amazon Account.
Amazon suggests that you wait 14 days to withdraw funds.
It's paid to a bank account or whatever account you set up in the beginning of your Amazon account. No PayPal
You get the list of backers with your survey. This is where you can ask them anything you want related to delivery of the product.
I've only created my own spreadsheet for tracking.
Yes, there are companies out there that will fulfill your products and some even deliver for you all for a fee $$$
That's about all there is to it. Any other questions, don't hesitate to ask.
    Best,
    Dale
p.s. don't forget to look at my current KS project http://kck.st/1e3CkEM
    Cheers!

So it is really a very manual process? I am hoping you can send a broadcast to all the backers. If you have 1000 backers you don't want to send 1000 mails. Do you have their e-mail addresses from the start? What other information do you have from them without asking them for anything? Can you download that as a CSV? If I could I would probably download their e-mail addresses and some extra info and upload it into a system that I will have to write. Ask them to log into a website with certain details and go enter some required fields.

I do know that there is a "message backers" option that lets you message all backers at once. You can also message all backers in a certain tier level.

Taskman, They have surveys you can use to collect their email addresses. And you will definitely want them. What if you want to sell more items to your backers later on? Or you run another campaign? Then you will have a list of 1000 emails who already loved your previous projects.

You can also do a backers only update on the project, that way you don't have to email them all individually.

Is there somewhere that I can get an example export from Kickstart with maybe dummy data? I am thinking if I could write an online app where people could upload their backers into and then manage the backers there, e.g status of shipments. I am hoping I can at least get something like this done before my own Kickstarter

"I am thinking if I could write an online app where people could upload their backers into and then manage the backers there"

See: BackerKit. I know there are one or two other websites like this, but I can't seem to remember them. Will probably compile this info into a blog post at some point. Also, KickTraq is working on a product similar to BakerKit, but they haven't released it yet (http://www.pledgedev.com/).

Not discouraging you from doing it, just sharing competitor info.

It seems kicktraq only tracks what is happening with the project while it is running. It doesn't help you after the project
BackerKit is probably charging a bit much I would say if it is a project with a large funding goal. Actually the $150 setup should probably be enough. Paying an extra 1% on the funding goal is going overboard

What does BackerKit give you that Kickstarter doesn't give you?
