I browsed the guidelines of kickstarter but still failed to understand - can I start a commercial software project with the help of kickstarter or cannot I?
Please forgive me if it's a lame question.

To my understanding, yes you can. I've seen a few on the website and on Indiegogo. However, aside from games, I haven't found any that have done very well. The only requirement is "Kickstarter cannot be used to fund software projects not run by the developers themselves."
