promote traffic to site without spamming?

not sure best way to approach it and have mainly been doing facebook/twitter statuses and getting friends to promote as well.
Any advice is appreciated

I would say Reddit is a good place to get traffic. I would recommend not posting your own stuff but having someone else post your site for you (they frown upon such things for some reason)

Ive never understood the frowning. Only because if you are not posting OC then someone else is mad about reposts...

One thing I would say on this is you have to be in my opinion aggressive on the marketing, but also as you mentioned not spam. Get the right mix will be the best for your project! I agree with a previous comment that Reddit would be an excellent place to start!
