I was wondering, has anyone ever used Google ads?

Besides adsense for a short while for Youtube, no.

I have for promoting products and services. It really varies on the effectiveness. Essentially you are paying for keyword terms and eyeballs. Some keywords have a lot of competition, so the prices are higher than other terms. The prices can also go up over time, making advertising affordable in the short run, but not the long run sometimes.

My main goal when using google ads is to figure out as quickly as possible the cost of acquisition of a new customer and figure out whether or not that cost makes sense to keep advertising.

Example:
$100 - 1 customer = $150 in revenue and $50 in profit doesn't make sense.
$100 - 1 customer = $300 in revenue and $100 in profit is okay. You could pocket that or re-invest it.
$100 - 1 customer = $500 in revenue and $300 in profit is ideal because then you can re-invest the $200 to get more customers and also pocket $100.

I am trying to do that right now. It's about as clear as mud. It appears that if I don't include "kickstarter" in my keyword then it will cost about $3 CPC.

I guess now I know why Google has so much money.

I finally got my Google ads to run. The process is overly complex, I think, but I guess that is the way it needs to be. I thought others might be interested in my experience, so here are my numbers so far.

I have generated 2000 impressions.
I have generated 34 clicks.
I have generated 0 pledges from these ads.
I have paid an average of $0.36 per click.

The vast majority of my clicks have come from the search words "Kickstarter game."

I am surprised in general that my project has done so poorly, but I am very surprised that these ad clicks would do so poorly, since they are highly targeted and self-selected.

That's a pretty low cost per click. What keywords or phrases were you targeting?

It can also be difficult to see results with a low sample size. Like if you got 500 clicks and no one pledged, that's a pretty good indication that they don't like the project or it's not the right audience. You could also change up the phrasing to see if you can improve the conversion rate.

34/2,000 = 1.7% conversion rate.

we`re trying google ads for our new comic book series. We have just started, today. I will update you with the results.

The thing is we believe that for especially "niche" marketing, like in our comic book case, for example we have "mecha warriors" or "mecha robots" (there is no such thing indeed but you got the idea) so refined and for rare search keywords we believe google ads could do a great job
