Do Press Releases work? (free or premium)

Hello,

We are working on our relaunch and the biggest concern is getting enough press. On our first campaign our conversion numbers would be considered quite good (5.5% video play to backer) but we didn't get nearly enough traffic. We know we have to do something different this time.

But what? Press releases?

In our research we found more people saying don't waste your time with Press Releases because they don't work. The consensus say to find a few relevant media outlets and try and create a repoire with them, join their Twitter, make comments and then when it comes time to ask them to cover your campaign you will have a better shot. Obviously this takes a long time and there are no guarantees.

I would love to hear from other creators on their experience with using Press Releases, what worked? what was a waste of money? Did the free one's make anything happen for your campaign?

Thanks.

Was wondering if you go a satisfactory answer on this..... The company I represent has asked me about them and I'm just not sure it's worth the time (other than using it as a post on our corporate blog.) If you get a chance, please post up and update.

They work if you nail the introduction and have a great presentation of your product (mediakit, landing page) then I guess the last step is to find 100% targeted authors and editors to pitch your idea NOT random authors that write for mashable for example...
