How do you catch the interest of potential backers?

I want to start a kickstarter soon on a project which I've been working on, and I wondered what makes you interested in something, and what makes you pass over it.

I'm interested by:
1) Products that speak to an interest of mine (Sci Fi, Effective Parenting, Music I like, etc.)
2) People whose video / text makes me want them to succeed. This usually includes them be excited about their product, a positive attitude, a sense of capability, and often the sense of what the project will mean in their lives - if, for example it's them taking the plunge into something that's been their life's passion, etc.
3) Maybe I'm a jerk that way, but if it looks like the campaign is going well, it makes me think they probably have a sense of what they're doing.
4) Updates. If there are interesting updates it lets me know they're on the ball, and can draw me further into the project.

I think you can catch the interest of backers is to be really social. There are a lot of Facebook crowdfunding groups you can join. Some are good and some are not. You just have to go thru them.
Sharing other creators projects also works very well. You just have to find your niche. It's definitely a full time job.
Sal on this forum for instance offers to give promotion if you post 50+ posts here (not just one worders). I qualified for this on one of my projects and with his social networks, I definitely found a spike in my backers. Go to his site as there is so much information to learn from.
http://www.crowdfundingpr.org/. I think this is one of the best crowdfunding forums out there. But as you know, a lot of all this work should be done in advance of your campaign launching. Good luck with your project!

Be personal when contacting people. Especially people you know.

I've tried appealing to the genre and others with similar interests, but it seems to be an uphill battle. Kickstarter has been around for a while, so the newness has worn off for most. People know what it is and they are more selective with their support. My novel started off with a bang with support from Reddit where it was born, but it has had a lot of trouble reaching other markets.
