Just how important is Facebook and Twitter?

Hi all,

I have lived in China for the past 4 years. And as some of you may know, this country has a ban on some websites, including Facebook and Twitter. I understand there are VPN's I can use to get around this problem, but I find it inconvenient. And because of its inconvenience, I really haven't used Facebook much in the last few years - maybe once a month, just to see if there is any news back home. And I've never even touched Twitter. So I don't use these resources.

From your experiences, how much promotion or importance is put into Facebook and/or Twitter?

I'd say facebook and twitter are one way of reaching your family/friends and target market. If you don't plan to use Facebook, you need another way to keep your friends updated about the project and do direct outreach to them (email? phone call?).

If you don't plan to use Twitter, you need another way of getting news articles about your project out and connecting with audiences (forums? google+/linkedin groups? reddit?).

It is proven that the usage of social media is a highly effective tool for reaching out to and building a community. In academic literature it is identified as a statistical significant factor for success. Facebook and Twitter is not the only platforms you can use, but using similar sites as a tool for communicating and building relations with backers is definitely a tool that can increase your chance of success.

From a general standpoint I'd say very important. But they aren't the only tools out there if that's what you're afraid of.

You need a casual communication channel for your project and Twitter and Facebook provide that. You still need to use them effectively though to both grow your reach and retain the attention of your current audience!

Well if you follow Coolest Cooler, I thought he had practically a FB non-presence because he has his FB connected and hardly any home posts. But in reality, He had at least 8 months of selling at every party around. So college + cooler = the coolest. A lot of back ground work. https://www.facebook.com/TheCoolestCool ... =1&theater

Pretty important. You need to be able to share updates on multiple mediums

For me, facebook and twitter are the main way of getting your project out to the public. In addition I have been using linked in and some good old fashioned flyer drops around Amsterdam to drum up some local support.

Is anyone paying for Facebook promotional tools? How effective are the tools that come with a page, in terms of promotion and getting the word out?
