2 questions regarding producthunt.com and the press

Hi, guys, I got 2 questions.
1. What is the best way to use a site like ProductHunt.com? Do we use it to link to a landing page to get an email list before the Kickstarter campaign launch? or Do we use it when we launch, linking it to the campaign page, so people who are interested can take action asap?

2. When is the best time to write to the press? I read somewhere that you should write to the press a week before you launch, and remind them again the day before or on the launch day. I wonder if that is enough. Should we start even earlier, like two or three weeks before? I am talking about the press that I don't have a relationship with.

The best time to issue a press release is when your campaign is at least 30% funded, most obvious reason for this is that editors like to publish success stories, they rarely cover a crowdfunding campaign just because it has started. The best way to use Product Hunt is to ideally have your own list to target and to somehow get them to upvote you within your launch and 24 period. The value of being on PH is getting on their newsletter and also a valuable backlink.

For my point ov view Press Release Distribution Services are not the best way if earned media is your goal.
I saw people paying more than 500$ for PR and they get back same service as you could find on Fiverr for less than 30$.
Most services upload your release on B-list websites that nobody will see, wasting your time and money.

But, even if you will find the most trustable service:
  • There is NO SEO value.
  • ROI is incredibly difficult to find with a distribution service.
  • Most press releases sent via a newswire should have been a blog.
  • Results come from relevance and media relations.
  • Mass sending never works and it’s never a numbers game.
Never start a crowdfunding without having a good audience and don’t waist money with those who promise to get results in 10 days; this never ever works.
Crowdfunding has to be planned at least 6 month before and never start it without a good audience.

Once understand this simple point you should move to the next questions that is how to create my community.

You could run some good hacks for that, like:
  • Use social automation-bots
  • Reply to journalists questions and ask them to share your project
  • Referral Campaigns
  • Post Viral Contents
  • Newsrooms instead of Press Release Distribution
