Do good references even matter?

I've been scammed before by a marketing promotion that had good references before. I know others here have had a similar experience. Does anyone actually take references into account when looking into a marketing service??

if they had good references, then how do you know you didn't just have a bad product that no one wanted to buy?

What kind of question is this, of course they matter. Reference checks are the only way to see how good a company is.

Not really, sometimes it is hard to get ahold of the executives to perform the check of references. Especially when you've got a live campaign running - you can't wait weeks to hear back from a reference check.
