About

An art piece and functional light that interprets Thomas Edison's light bulbs with Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. Fascinating steampunk!

Project Inspiration

What do Thomas Edison and Mary Shelley have in common? I was watching Thomas Edison Kinetogram Frankenstein (1910) on YouTube about a year ago and I was inspired to come up with an art piece project that would embrace Edison light bulbs and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein novel.

It was through the production facilities of Edison Manufacturing Company movie studios in the Bronx New York that Mary Shelley's creation was first projected into cinematic existence.

But how to combine these two different concepts that are so unrelated? I started searching various Edison light bulb designs and watching the original 1910 Edison Kinetogram movie again plus other various other films of Frankenstein. For the Edison bulbs I chose a round bulb and empirical cylinder bulb.

In the various Frankenstein films that I watched to bring the monster alive, two separate spheres were used to send lightning bolts to the monster's body to bring him ALIVE (a.k.a. Van de Graaff generator) so I came up with two separate mouth blown glass spheres with the Edison bulbs inserted inside.

It is set up like a seesaw and can go up and down and rotate to adjust the light patterns. It is constructed out of aircraft grade aluminum along with stainless steel fasteners. Some parts are anodized others are not. The parts that are not anodized have been hand finished to bring out the machine age look.

did you use a promotion manager to advertise with featured site or did you do ground work yourself ?

This is an interesting campaign with such a high pledge requirment. I wonder if they would be doing even better if they had a lower pledge amount in exchange for something relevant to the product?

Yes they really do have a high minimum pledge requirement, I'm sure that they would have done a lot better with a lower pledge. They might have gotten twice a much because it is a beautiful product. Oh well they reached their goal and that's all that matters I suppose.

Brilliant idea! I just love seeing original and creative ideas, especially when they do so well. I've noticed it's common for these niche ideas tend to do well the most when it's a low leveled goal too. Perhaps higher leveled goals require far more effort in promotion and to build a project with more clarity?

Thanks for all the nice comments. We got our funding but two of the big backers might not come thru as there were problems with their payments. That's part of the pins and needles at the end where you hope everyone hangs on.

Regarding some of the comments on our reward levels - there wouldn't be any point in making it at a lower price. We basically are making a little profit on this as it its. It's all handcrafted and the time it takes to make each one is very labor intensive. That's the beauty of creating something like this.

All promotion was done by us and we didn't hire anyone for this. It's a huge job as everyone knows. All the press we got was from making relations. One of the bigger boosts was from this forum! Sal did a great job. I reached the 50 posts and then he did as promised and featured our project.

Love this forum and all the creative projects out there. Now off to start building these beautiful lamps.
