They are thinking of exploiting reddit in a way. Actually, their tips should start with how project creators can contribute to the reddit communities. Sometimes, your product is so inherently interesting that just publicising it to a subreddit is good enough.
Other times though, you need to provide value. AMA's are a good one. Asking for feedback also provides a conversation piece. Here are some of my own thoughts on using Reddit even before you launch on Kickstarter/ Indiegogo:

Thanks for sharing the article, the tips are good.
I have got success on Reddit in the past. Some of my blog posts related to the travel niche had fetched 10k to 30k uniques from Reddit.
I like the idea of spending a small budget to promote stuff on Reddit, it is worth it.

Thanks for this post, I signed up to reddit for the first time and I can see the potential it has to gather a nice community around topics in common, I think it will be of great help when I launch our campaign
