Campaigns and Web sites

I've come across a lot of people who say it's a good idea to have a companion site to your Kickstarter campaign, but none go into too great of detail on the subject.
I've so far created a really simple, not-yet-showable site for my campaign, but I find I'm just regurgitating stuff already on my Kickstarter page.
What do you guys think about creating web sites to bolster your campaigns? And should I be directing people to my Kickstarter page, or should I direct them to my web site which would then have a link to the campaign?
