$1.9M Historic Expedition on Kickstarter

This project is another example of a Kickstarter use I never would have imagined before:

Seventy-six years ago, Amelia Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan set off on the most dangerous leg of a flight around the world, the 2,556-mile journey from New Guinea to Howland Island in the Pacific. They were never seen again. The rescue team gave up after a 17-day search and the incident was "officially set down... as one of aviation's mysteries."

Dana Timmer, a pilot and four-time America’s Cup sailor, is one of many people still fascinated by Earhart’s disappearance. Timmer, who led a $1 million deep-sea search for the plane in 1999, believes Earhart’s twin-engined Lockheed Electra has already been found — researchers just didn’t realize it. He’s asking for nearly $2 million on Kickstarter to prove his theory right.

In return backers of this project will get to experience the discovery as it is happening in the form of progress updates, live documentary footage, and other interesting content.

How do you guys feel about this project?

That's actually great! Getting funding for historic research is often difficult, especially as an individual. Using Kickstarter for these projects is a very smart idea! If this is successful it may trigger more historic research campaigns, which can only by good.

Very cool. Unfortunately, based on their Kicktraq data, looks like the campaign hasn't progressed much since launching. http://www.kicktraq.com/projects/107928 ... g-amelias/

Wow this would be so cool if it got funded. They've only got 1% of their goal so far... $1.9M is kind of crazy though, maybe they should break it up into a handful of smaller projects instead to get funded step by step.

Maybe he would have better luck trying to find flight 370

That's an amazingly large funding goal. Has any other project with a goal that big ever been funded ?

Also, thanks for pointing me to kicktraq.com. I never knew it existed.

@billrock Yea, Kicktraq is a pretty useful tool. Also KickSpy. Yes - the pebble watch raised 10 million on Kickstarter. See: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/59 ... nd-android

I know the pebble project raise $10 million, but their funding goal was only $100,000. I also have a problem. Last night TWO projects that sort of compete with mine appeared on Kickstarter. My project is a drone. I'm wondering if I should try to compete with these two projects. My drone is open source, and about half the price of theirs.

I think that this is a great KS campaign. Solving the world's mysteries! I'd due the same if I had extensive knowledge on the subject, for sure!

@lefabeur - Agreed! It's very inspirational to see so many people rallying around a cause they care about.
