In May of 2012 a campaign for a printed book of web comics was fully funded, having raised $50,000 on a goal of $8,000. The web comics were hosted at PicturesForSadChildren.com. The book is called “Sad Pictures For Children.”
Now the project has become a sad picture. In a long, rambling and incoherent message posted to backers – entitled “IT’S OVER” – the project creator has posted a video of himself burning 127 books. He says each one represents one message he has received about the campaign since January 1, 2014.
burning booksOne quote from the post sums up the cause and effect…
I shipped about 75% of kickstarter rewards to backers. I will not be shipping any more. I will not be issuing any refunds. For every message I receive about this book through e-mail, social media or any other means, I will burn another book.
The post also alludes to anti-depressants, a Vanguard retirement account that was liquidated, a rabbit that got hit by a car, an apparent screenshot of his bank account balance, revelations on sexuality, affluence and entitlement… it’s hard to read and paints a picture that leads one to suspect mental illness may be at play.
He sums up the protocol for requesting refunds: “If you would like a refund, please contact a fan of my work directly for your money. This is where the money would come from anyway. I am cutting out the middle man.”
Meanwhile, backers who have received the printed book seem to be conspiring to distribute the book in an online format.
