I like the idea. I used to be a part of a coed community service fraternity and we would deal with issues of hunger and homelessness a lot. Not only could it open people's eyes to some of the hardships, but it could also help give them a voice and let them tell their story through images.
Critique: I would include more photographs in your campaign, maybe of San Francisco or take some yourself to show people what the result could be like. You could also mention the Pursuit of Happyness book to help people connect, I believe Chris Gardner lived in San Francisco while he was homeless, though I am not completely sure.
