I would really like to know your experiences with email. Did you find that, that was your strongest asset to get the ball running or what?

I only have 22 pledges and 21 were from direct emails to people I know. I have sent out at least 100 direct emails and most people say they will back but have not so I have to wait patiently and not re-post to their timeline which I have not done.

In fact, the was the entire call to action of one email: "I'm writing to ask you for one thing: please share this campaign with your network on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, your blog, wherever you use social media." And I offered a reward to anyone who shared the campaign and told me they'd done it. It worked.

Write down 50 to 100 people. Imagine getting married and you have to invite people to your ceremony that you are paying for. These people are your close friends. You can interact with them more casually than most people. Be passionate about your project. I have received 22 pledges by emails and 1 only by direct search on KickStarter.
