Is a FREE product feasible for a Kickstarter campaign?

    by nonp2wtech » Wed Jul 06, 2022 12:49 pm

    Hi there,

We created a campaign for our product, Galaxy Foes (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/no ... alaxy-foes) that is a FREE TO PLAY MMORPG.
My question is that if free products use to have successful kickstarter campaigns. I assume it's difficult because the supportes will not receive the paid product. That's why we have a lot of in-game rewards for supporting.

Is it enough? What are your thoughts?

Yes, a free product can still have a successful Kickstarter campaign! To make it work, focus on offering exclusive in-game rewards, engaging with your community, and setting clear goals for what the funds will achieve. Make sure to highlight the value of supporting your project, perhaps with early access or special content, and keep backers updated on your progress. If you create a strong sense of involvement and offer valuable incentives, you can definitely attract support for a free-to-play game.

First off, Galaxy Foes sounds like an exciting project—MMORPGs have such a strong and passionate community, so I think you’re on the right track!

To answer your question, running a Kickstarter for a free-to-play product can be challenging, but it’s definitely not impossible. The key is showing supporters the value of their contributions beyond just getting a paid product. Here are a few thoughts:

Exclusive In-Game Rewards: It sounds like you’re already offering these, which is great! Make sure the rewards feel truly special—like early access, unique skins, custom avatars, or naming rights for characters, items, or locations. Exclusivity can be a strong motivator.

Behind-the-Scenes Access: Supporters often enjoy being part of the creative process. Offering tiers that include involvement, like voting on game features or joining beta testing groups, can help them feel like co-creators.

Tangible Rewards: Even for a digital product, physical items like posters, art books, or branded merch can make a campaign more appealing.

Storytelling: Use your campaign page to tell your story and why Galaxy Foes is worth supporting. Highlight the passion and dedication of your team—it’s often the personal connection that wins people over.

Stretch Goals: Add enticing stretch goals to keep momentum going. For instance, unlocking additional content or features as funding increases can excite both current and potential backers.

Lastly, engaging with MMORPG communities and influencers could give your campaign the visibility it needs. Wishing you the best of luck!

Free-to-play games can definitely be successful on Kickstarter, but it's true, the strategy needs to be a bit different. In-game rewards are a great start, especially if they offer unique cosmetics, early access, or gameplay advantages.
