How to reduce the weight of the car?

    by IreneGrant » Sun Apr 25, 2021 12:53 pm

    Hi,

I post before about my slash 4x4 with a computer on it running autonomously and I got a lot of help every time I asked. Really grateful to this community.

My car participates in races, and to run faster, I need to reduce the weight. Every ounce counts. On the computer side, I am doing things like shorten the wire, remove heat sink and screws, etc. I thing there should be a lot of things I can do on the car mechanical side. I am looking for comments about removing unnecessary parts or replacing with parts made with lighter materials. However, I can not use other traxxas model, nor can I change the size or shape. Something I am considering now are 1)remove the rear bumper, which may be difficult since it is required to hold other parts, unless I am willing to cut it off. 2)remove the handles on both side where we hold the car, which seemed difficulty too when I looked at. Anything else? Anyone know what is the heaviest part of the car?

Below are pics of my car.

Thanks for your request. Well, it would work well on slash 4x4. You just need to hold the rear arm pins in. The next step would be losing the entire short course rear bumper. But there is another option for you. You can put the original plastic suspension bits back instead of that sparkling aluminum stuff. You know, I like to follow sources where I can find out about changes in the car weights depending on a particular model. For example, I was very surprised to find out that my Toyota Alphard did have no changes in its weight since 2017. It's was big news for me, I thought I have the heavies model of 2020. The heaviest part of the car is the body, followed by the chassis if this isn't a unibody-type vehicle. After that would come the engine, then the transmission/differential for front-wheel drive vehicles. From there, the battery, wheels and tires, and smaller items will complete the count. To demonstrate approximately how much each piece of the car weighs, kg to lbs conversion was used. But in general, as mentioned in the comment above, if you want to make your car lighter, I think you can replace some metal parts with plastic or other lighter materials. Before doing this, it would be good to talk to a specialist in this field.
