Book of Fae - rough start

    by Bookoffae » Mon Oct 01, 2018 1:34 pm

I had planned on Launching The Book of Fae on Oct. 1st and had to keep that date for a number of reasons. Unfortunately (and fortunately) I go a consulting gig and ended up in the middle of China... bad internet speed, have to use VPN's for just about anything... and the 3-4 week pre-launch my time was consumed instead of planning and learning how do do a Kickstarter launch - any suggestions welcome - I know traditional marketing but am a newbie to Kickstarter... and to tell you the truth social media, - ok enough crying.

In at going on two days at $346.00 of $5K goal.

Think the quickest way to explain what I am trying to do is to post the initial press release:

Book of Fae Launches Website and Kickstarter Event
    Fairy and Fantasy lovers rejoice!

Oct 1st, 2018, Orlando Florida – Today Artist Assets LLC and The Book of Fae announced the simultaneous launch of the highly anticipated BookOfFae.com web site and a Kickstarter funding event. The Book of Fae is a series of high-fantasy illustrated stories and books, both in printed form and in an online format. These stories feature mythical deities, fairies, dragons, and other fantastical creatures. On The Book of Fae’s roadmap there are no less than 20 graphical books and two playable story-driven role playing games scheduled. According to the founder, Rick Merriman, “We have chosen to have a Kickstarter crowdfunding event to speed the release of all the content we have initially planned to release.” Each book in the series will be superbly illustrated with approximately half the pages being full color plates.

    “World building” a never-ending-story

From the onset, The Book of Fae was designed to be a never-ending collection of art, tales, lore, and legends. Later this year the storyline will be opened to independent writers, artists, and editors to contribute to an ever evolving, ever growing world. Most of the lore and world backstories have been written over the last 20-years. According to Rick, “before we open the world to any who would like to participate we need to get all this information and content available and published so our future writers and artists have a base to work from. This is the main reason we have chosen to partially fund the project via Kickstarter.”

Artists and writers need a revenue stream

Much of this project is based on a concept the founder calls “Open Source Creativity, or OSC.” Though there are many aspects of OSC, at its core it is a way for indie fantasy artists and writers to generate an income from their passion by building upon each other’s work. “There is a tremendous wealth of unknown talent out there,” says Merriman who has been involved in the online fantasy writing and art scene since the 1990’s. “I hope to provide a place where these artists can generate an income instead of eking out an existence in a 9-5 job they hate.”

    Quality fantasy art and stories

Though providing visual artists and writers a way to generate income is a major concern, it may be dwarfed by the desire that all content is of the highest quality for the audience of both the book series and the online presence. “This is priority number one” says Merriman.

Will Book of Fae become a cult classic?

With quality illustrated stories in a format of never-ending and always-growing storylines, Rick was asked if he thought The Book of Fae may one day become a cult classic, the likes of Lord of the Rings or Star Wars. He simply smiled and replied, “Ask me that again in a year or two.”

Hi Rick. The gut feeling is that the Press Release is pretty crap. There's no background on you - whether it's because you've won awards or been featured elsewhere or your previous publications. The PR mentions excitement, but there isn't much and can't really compare to LOR.

Instead you should re-work the campaign page to focus solely on the book, specific pages and words used. If you scroll x4 pledges down, this is the only way to grab a book. If you relaunch, remove the wallpapers, cards and tshirts and just focus on your book and story.

Could you perhaps attend events in your niche or even a sit down read at a local bookstore - then redirect them to your campaign page to support you.

Thank you kindly for your advice. And yes I think I commercialized this one too much and did not focucus on the book and the art. We'll see how this one goes and re-launch if needed.
