    Retargeting with a Facebook Pixel

    by TiMe22 » Wed Nov 02, 2016 1:17 pm

In our campaign we have some very good results in targeting FB ads at people who already visited us before. Kind of makes sense because most people would probably like to see your product a few times before they actually commit to it :)

It's pretty straight forward to target FB ads at an audience based on the people that have visited you before by using the FB Pixel ( or retarget Google Adwords with a Google Tag). However the problem is that Kickstarter only let's you add your Google Analytics account to your project.

We are currently playing with a simple to use (but complicated to program) redirection layer where we can tag and identify all traffic coming from our ads, social media, website etc. With this layer we can track which ads/links work best and target everybody who visited us via this link with a FB ad :) Also it shows our project video when you include the link in Twitter or Facebook post. Sweet right?! (we can also show a text/image in the preview).

A redirect to our project with optional source identification (to track which ad is best) looks like https://302.re/robusto/ksforum where robusto is our project name and ksforum identifies that this link is placed here. If you add this link to a Tweet or FB Post it will show our video (test it here: https://cards-dev.twitter.com/validator).

Is this something that could be of use for a wider audience? I mean this might be something we could turn into a service that everybody could use, so maybe it's a good plan to run a beta-test with 5 projects. If you are interested shoot me a PM and we'll setup a redirection for your project.

I was also curious about solution on how to retarget FB users on Kickstarter. By using a redirect, wouldn't you lose all the campaign information that you would be passing to Google Analytics?

The short answer is yes, with any standard redirect or even Bit.ly you will lose the URL tracking parameters unless your redirect solution doesn't strip them out (which 99% of them do). With a tool like Bit.ly you can shorten the link INCLUDING the parameters so when it redirects it will populate the parameters. So it wouldn't be bit.ly/xxxx?utm_source=example since that will be dropped during the redirect. You would want to take http://www.kickstarter.com/my-project/? ... ce=example AND THEN shorten that link. The only downside to that is that you then need a unique Bit.ly link each time, and obviously Bit.ly doesn't support link based retargeting. We actually built a link retargeting software for this exact purpose when we were running our Kickstarter campaign and couldn't find a solution.

Easy Retarget also supports UTM and source parameters for GA extremely well so you don't lose the parameters. There are multiple ways for it to pass those tracking parameters using our links. Here's a blog post that goes into more detail about it:

Good point. Just wanted to say you should of wrote "utm_source" not "utm_souce".

At the end of the url you could write anything, example:
    ?ref=ThisStuff

    - It should still be tracked. Also using subdomains is a great way to track what works instead of hunting down specific urls.

Good catch on the typo. Thanks! Edited my original post.

You're correct about our links maintaining any of the "?ref=ThisStuff" parameter as well. The other cool thing is that our links will pass source parameters per usual if they are not set. So if you just post a standard ezrt.io/xxxx link (which is our shortened link) to www.example.com then all traffic from example.com will show in your Google Analytics as a referral source, just like it would without the shortened link. :)

after experiencing sales with watch/design based campaign, i think its save to say its easier to target them since you can get the audience who shows interest in 2 levels : watches and kickstarter.

so these two will narrow down your audience better than the other.
