Day 3 on my 1st project: Lazy Creatures

    by stephjiang » Fri May 09, 2014 1:56 pm

Hey guys! I'm an avid fan of Kickstarter (backed 20+ projects since I joined the community last year), and I recently launched my own campaign for Lazy Creatures, my loungewear line: http://kck.st/1qc9XKc

I'm 16% funded currently, but most of it has been from external sources (89%), and support from the Kickstarter community has been milder than expected.

Here's what I've been doing so far to market the campaign:

    1. Facebook: Asking friends & family to spread the word. They have been so, so kind in posting about my project on Facebook - this is where most of my pledges came from.

    2. Instagram: I've been liking pictures with relevant tags and getting more followers on Instagram. This hasn't converted into any pledges, but it's a great way to start building a brand following.

    3. Blogs: I've contacted 27 blogs so far offering free samples, and received 3 responses. I'll be sending samples out to them next week, and hopefully I'll get a mention before the campaign ends. This was poor planning on my part - I should've sent out samples before launch.

    4. Mailing List: I have a tiny mailing list of 58 people who signed up on my website before launch. I haven't checked how many have backed my project, but the click-through rate on the e-mail was pretty good (39.7%).

Going forward, I'll be continuing with my Instagram & Blog strategy, and will look into Twitter as well.

Please let me know what you think about the campaign! Any feedback would be insanely helpful (:

I've done interviews of a few other fashion projects that may be helpful:

Have you reached out to any local publications that are fashion related? Are there any events in your community you can attend (meetup.com?) that are fashion related where you can show people your prototype and hand out business cards with the Kickstarter link (or have an ipad where people can pledge)?

I would also recommend you asking your family/friends to leave some comments on the project page.

    Thanks for the suggestions, Sal!

I have reached out to fashion publications. Most have not responded, but one did - I'll be sending her a sample and she'll do a write-up on Lazy Creatures. I don't know of any local fashion publications, but I will look for some location publications in general I can reach out to (:

I have searched for fashion meet-ups for a long time (mainly for personal interest) - unfortunately there really aren't any organized ones in my area (Orange, CA).

Didn't think about leaving comments on the Kickstarter page - does it affect any of the Kickstarter metrics?

Kickstarter doesn't publish their ranking algorithm, but I suspect it plays a role. I also think it can attract new backers, as the commenting section sort of functions as a community. See: http://www.crowdcrux.com/5-reasons-to-w ... gn-matter/

Hi Steph! I'm bumping this because I'm curious if you ended up getting much out of Instagram? I know a lot of people talk about using Facebook and Twitter, but my Twitter following is nil (I hate using it), only a small percentage of Facebookers see my posts... but I really love using Instagram. I'm not even sure yet if I'm going to do a Kickstarter, but trying to work within my means if that makes sense.
