I have backed close to around 10 Kickstarter campaigns and I would say I back them because they appeal to me either emotionally or they generally have a clear purpose. Something that's bigger than just "wanting money" I think is usually key.

I think the most important thing is just realizing how much work goes into creating a campaign. It's something that has to be started months in advance and includes working on it everyday to build that following and make sure you know the message your trying to get across.
