I'd also definitely recommend putting a $1 reward so friends and family can become a backer without feeling they have to contribute a lot.

Look up similar successful projects on Kickstarter and reach out to the creators.

I didn't know that. I know of some projects who have cancelled and re-launched. You should confirm with Kickstarter directly. If you cancel or funding is unsuccessful and Kickstarter rejects your project the 2nd time around then try Indiegogo.
