Wow, some very cool projects there. (That foot hammock could definitely come in handy!) Experience, research and advanced preparation are all key. At least I'm learning (finally!)

Definitely seems like lining up some backers beforehand to build momentum and buzz is the way to go. Fail on my part. Still, doing what I can during my current campaign will help me learn to do it better next time.
