@garethjax - I'd say that's a good starting point. Passionate communities usually form around something, whether that's a killer product (minecraft, apple products, beanie babies), mission, or content/topic (blog, forum).

I know guys that have started minecraft community type sites that had a massive community relatively quickly (one-two months). Other people spend years trying to create a community around their stuff (guy kawasaki, tim ferriss, seth godin).

It really varies, but I think the heart of every community is communication centered around something, so anyway you can foster communication usually pays off. In the beginning, if you have 5-10 core supporters that sort of jumpstart discussions and help you get the word out about things, that's a great starting point.

I'm new here. From my own experience and observation, communities are sparked by a small group of people with the same goal and objective and is driven by consistent and constant updates and maintenance of the same topic :) You have to be a master of the topic for people to come to you.

I would like to share with all the forum user my first kickstarter campaign project.

Sentri is a complete smart home security solution designed to give you visibility and control of your home, no matter where you are. Sentri learns from your behaviors, preferences, and home environment to keep you informed of your home’s most vital stats (temperature, humidity, weather, and air quality) and notifies you of irregularities to keep your home secure. It also comes with traditional home security features like an HD camera and motion detectors that enable users to keep an eye on their homes.

Please support Sentri on Kickstarter to make your home smarter.

I'm really glad to see there's a Kickstarter Forum - even though it's not officially affiliated with Kickstarter, I can see there are experienced people here I'm sure I'll learn from. I love to have Forums to visit that are connected with programs I use and interests I have. Great!
