    S/Ws WiFi controlled

    by TomSands » Sun Dec 08, 2024 12:20 pm

I have pot lights around my home controlled by a WiFi signal. I did have a problem for some unknown reason where after working perfectly for several weeks, they would only work manually.

Today my neighbour (electrical contractor) fixed them. I have a question he wasn't sure about and that is if my computer was completely disconnected, would that require that the lighting be reset?

Naturally I don't want to find out (perhaps the hard way) by unplugging my computer. Anyone know for sure?

Last week I reconfigured my Wi-Fi network and had to have my computer (or iPhone, iPad, AirPod, AirPod mini, or Apple TV) powered up and running in order to relink, reset, or re-configure any one or all of my so-called lifestyle devices (lights, switches, thermostats, video cameras, thermostats, etc). Without knowing the specifics of your devices, their configuration, and network type I can only speculate, but I am a bit surprised that your neighbor didn't need to have your computer, or another device running in order to restore your lights to full functionality. Even though you control them via Wi-Fi, is it possible they use a zigbee or similar connection through your home's wiring?

If your computer is critical for controlling your WiFi-connected pot lights, unplugging it could disrupt the system and require a reset. That kind of setup isn’t very practical since it depends so much on your network. A better option for reliability and style is adding some floor lamps for living room, Sunmory has great options with solid quality and sleek designs.

Glad to hear your neighbor was able to fix the issue with your pot lights.

Regarding your question, whether your lights need to be reset if your computer is disconnected depends on how your WiFi-controlled lighting system is set up. If your computer is acting as the primary hub or controller for the lights, disconnecting it could interrupt the connection and require a reset.

However, if the lights are connected directly to your WiFi router and managed through an app or cloud service, your computer being disconnected shouldn’t affect them. To be safe, you might want to double-check your system’s user manual or the app settings for clarification.

It’s always a good idea to back up any configuration settings before making changes, just in case. Hope this helps!

It's unlikely that disconnecting your computer would require resetting the lights. The WiFi connection is what controls them, not your computer specifically. The lights are probably connected to your home's WiFi network via your router. As long as your router is still working and broadcasting the WiFi signal, the lights should still be controllable via your phone or other devices, even if your computer is off. The issue you had before was probably something else entirely, maybe a temporary glitch with the WiFi or the light's software.
