    Cancelling a Project

    by MrPunch » Tue Dec 06, 2022 3:03 pm

Newbie here thinking of dipping my toe into the world of Kickstarter, hello all!

My question: if I launch a Kickstarter project and decide after a couple of weeks that it's not going to reach targets or be viable to continue... I understand from the FAQs that I can just cancel it. (And then presumably relaunch it as a new evolved project in future.)

What I'm not clear on is, are there any costs or charges for cancelling a live project? Or indeed, any other implications I can't think of?

Yes, you’re right that you can cancel a project if you decide it's not working out. When it comes to costs, Kickstarter itself doesn’t charge any fees for canceling a project. You won’t be penalized financially for deciding to end your campaign early.

However, keep in mind a few things:

Backers' Trust: If you cancel your project, it might affect how potential backers view you in the future. They might be hesitant to support a new project if they see that you’ve canceled a previous one.
Reputation: There might be some reputation management needed after canceling. Make sure to communicate clearly and professionally with your backers about why you’re canceling and your plans for the future.
Project Data: If you have data or feedback from your campaign, use it to refine your project before relaunching. It can be invaluable in understanding what didn’t work and how to improve.
Overall, canceling a project is a part of the learning process. Good luck with your Kickstarter journey! If you have any other questions or need more advice, feel free to ask.

As far as I know, Kickstarter does not charge any fees for canceling a crowdfunding project. If you feel that the project might not succeed, you can cancel it anytime, anywhere.

You’re right Kickstarter allows you to cancel a live project at any time and there are no fees or charges for doing so. However, any pledges made by backers up to that point will be voided, and no money will be collected.

One thing to keep in mind is how you communicate with your backers. Canceling a project can affect your credibility, so it’s a good idea to explain why you’re canceling and share your plans to relaunch with improvements. This transparency can keep backers interested for the future.

Good luck with your project I’m sure you’ll learn a lot from the process!

Hi! Welcome to the world of Kickstarter! You're right, you can cancel a project that isn't going well. There are no fees for canceling a live project. The main implication is that you won't receive any of the pledged funds (because they aren't collected until the project is successfully funded). You can definitely relaunch later with changes based on what you learned. It's a common practice.
