I'm mulling over the idea of upgrading my PC to make FreeCAD faster. I'm a linux user.

Some things slow FreeCAD to a halt: linear or polar features,fillets, etc.

My GPU is old and slow. I'm running an AMD A10-6700 APU with integrated graphics.

Will a modern graphics card take load off the CPU?

No GPU can't take a little bit of work of CPU. But CPU can take a little bit of work of GPU. This is why it is always important to take care so that the CPU is never overloaded.
