I was talking with a creator who has successfully funded two campaigns on KS and he suggested I re-launch my unsuccessful campaign in the Technology category as opposed to Design. He made some good points, but I'm still torn and would appreciate any insight you can offer.

The campaign in question will be a relaunch of this http://kck.st/1lArEvy , which did not reach funding in the Design category first time around.

Hmm.. that's a tricky question. I feel like it's a design project, not a technology project. Not sure whether or not Kickstarter would reject you.

What percentage of your backers came from your own network vs. kickstarter vs. marketing?

Of the 117 backers, 71% came from KS, 21% external, and 8% from direct marketing (Facebook).

I have also found that I've gotten no results from my direct marketing. I've spent 100$ on facebook and nearly 100% of my pledges have come from KS. Also, my project is design, but I posted it in photography.

I agree with sbriggman, this project probably would be better suited in design. On a side-note, you mentioned that you put 100$ into Facebook ads. It seems like most of the people I know who have launched Facebook marketing campaigns have been disappointed in their return on investment. I would suggest trying to find out where your target audience hangs out. For example try reddit.com/r/billiards.

You can change your category after your project is live. I have done that a few times. The first kickstarter I changed from art to photography and gained additional backers. My current project is more successful in design than in the fashion category.

I just received a reply from Kickstarter informing me that it's perfectly okay to resubmit under the technology category. They did, however, offer the following caveat: Remember to pay special attention to the Hardware and Product Design Guidelines (https://www.kickstarter.com/help/guidelines?ref=footer) while building your project.
