I had my fair share of contacts/discussions with PR experts, and even paid for 2 services, mostly to send out press releases. As you might imagine, the results were not as expected. In the meantime, I continued with my own targeted promotion, with some success - at least for spreading the word.

All this work is quite time consuming, and as the clock is ticking (17 days to go) I am now considering using external help. Anybody knows about PR agencies charging commission-based or hybrid fees? Does anyone use the service of Kickrank ?

I keep getting emails from people offering their help with my kickstarter project, if I get emails through kickstarter does this mean that they are legitimate?

Great question! Alot of the crowdfunding promotional companies and consultants on Kickstarter, Indiegogo, etc. are legitimate but it seems the majority of the ones that spam the users directly aren't. Either they are selling a good service for way to much money, or they are selling a useless service for cheap (i.e sharing your campaign to 100k fake followers or directing fake/bot traffic to your campaign).

TDLR; it's hard to distinguish the legitimate services from the scams.

Too many people behind this business. Crowdfunding website should advice project founders and avoid this

Sounds like a great service idea is to create a list of crowdfunding service companies that have a rating/voting system. Maybe this site could add one in some way?
