Staff picks do help by boosting your exposure through placing it on their Featured page and twitter feed, but this won't necessarily result in a cascade of backers. You can use it as a selling point, but it is not something that guarantees success or gives you a huge boost as some people think it does.

My project Crop Cycle got selected yesterday and I believe it was simply luck of the draw, as the length of your camapign, amount funded, and comments do not seem to play a role based on my experience.
