Why would anyone install an app that will show them adverts and does nothing else?
The reality is that they won't.
People will sometimes install an app that does something useful to them that also shows adverts.

Facebook can do targeted adverts because they have 900 million users.
Stick a pin in a map. There is a small business there. What is the chance of there being a few dozen people who live within five miles of that business who will install this app so it might be worth the business owner paying a monthly fee to reach them? The answer is zero, There are 300 million people in the USA and to a close approximation none of them will have this app installed.

It is 'flexible funding' so they get the money even if they don't reach the target (which they won't).
Anyone pledging to this is just giving free money to some idiotic marketers.
