I'll take your advice on that one. But I think Facebook isn't bad either?

I found Facebook was my social-media workhorse for the majority of the campaign, with Twitter coming in second but taking rather longer to pick up steam. I would say devote only a modest (but not nonexistent!) portion of your budget to ads or post boosts, etc -- and TBH almost everybody I got in my inbox approaching ME with advertising or PR offers smelled like either a scam artist or someone hawking the near-worthless ($150 for a generic press-release template and an email blast out to an uncurated list of press contacts who might have their emails set to go direct to spam? No thanks.)

It really is your initial circle of contacts who will be responsible for that first-week push, so having them as prepped as you can when it's go time is super crucial. That's when all those months and years spent being a good Internet (and RL!) friend to people can reward you karmically -- some folks will pledge and share because they like your work, but others will pledge and share just because they like YOU. ^^

I think an idea is to contact people who in the industry of where you're trying to receive funds from.

For example. If mine is about a 4 episode DVD, then I think it would be wise to approach people who really like comedy DVD's since my theme is comedy based. If it is similar to other characters, then find people who like those similar characters as well.

Another approach for films, is get in touch with Producers directly. This hard to do. Now if I get a IMDBPRO membership, I can reach out to Eugene Levy's agent, and just maybe, he could show what it is about since he hasn't done the Schmenge's since the 1980's. You never know, maybe he would fund it since he is a producer? Pass it to other producers?

    What do you people think?

It's not a bad idea to reach out to producers, but be prepared for the strong chance that you will not hear back. It's hard to get initial funders because if your campaign hasn't been successful yet, people are less likely to take interest.

    Hi Optionalsons,

I'm doing a musical campaign too. Thought the traffic on kickstarter of people wanting to back projects would be better then it is. All my backing has come from friends and family so far which is a shame as I had higher hopes for strangers helping strangers.

Just checked out your campaign as and I was intrigued about your $1 CD tag line. Cool campaign. I see you used the cat element in your pitch video, me too :) Just backed you, sorry that it's only the $1 one, I'm going to pull the poor artist card ;( but I downloaded your first album and subbed you on youtube to try and make up for my guilt :P

Daniel Johnston came to mind while listening to your stuff. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cW_G78sU9uw

Keep up the music and good luck with your campaign.

    Hi Evan,

All of my contributions so far have been from friends and family as well. (Except yours!) And the main point of my campaign is the $1 CD gimmick, so I was thrilled to see someone had claimed one!
Thanks for directing me to Daniel Johnston, I always have trouble figuring out what genre I am, or who I'm similar to, so thanks for the tip!
I wish you well with your campaign as well.

Glad I could be your first stranger donor :)

Yeah he was the first thing that popped into my mind when listening to your stuff. There's a great doco on him, which is how I came across him called "The devil and daniel johnston" that's probably on youtube somewhere.

If you want to check out some of my less filmy music, I have a band I with my brother that you can check out below.

I've found that the first 10% is probably the easiest bit - coming from friends and family etc.

Its generating traction after the first 10% that seems more difficult. Friends and family will happily pledge but getting people to share your page - that seems to be a different ask.

I am also interested in ways to promote your campaign, because I did it on facebook, twitter, a lot of LinkedIn groups, Google+, other people shared it, so where else? Or maybe I have to give it some time?(it's been only two days, but I got a bit scared when I saw that almost 30% people got heir 10% during their first day:D).
