Cards with Character (Drinking Game) Kickstarter

    by Emmay » Mon Aug 05, 2013 2:04 pm

    Hi Everyone,

My name is Emma and I've recently set up a kickstarter for my drinking game: Cards with Character.

    Kickstarter Link: http://kck.st/13SksBg

    Image

The game is played similar to the ring of fire without a tall disgusting drink at the end. The game consists of 29 different cards with a few multiples to bring the card deck to a 52 card pack. Each card displays a character and instructions of what you have to do and cards can multiply on you which can become quite hilarious.

Cards with Character would be very much suited to students but it's playable by anyone from any walk of life. It definitely gets the party going and breaks the ice with new people.

I hope to make the game into a mobile app. I am in development and prototyping stages at the moment with the simplest version of the app near to completion. I would however like to add further functionality to the mobile app to help it run as close to the physical card game as possible. No more leaving your drinking game at home, have it with you everywhere!

For more about the game, check out my kickstarter: http://kck.st/13SksBg
For more about me, my website is: http://www.emma-may.co.uk

If you are kind enough to share or pledge I would be very grateful. Most pledges include a version of the cards which I am only releasing for kickstarter.

    Thank you for viewing.

    Emma

Hey Emma. I think you would get better reception on the forum if you also commented on some other postings and reached out personally to other campaign creators on here :).

Have you thought of including a video for your campaign? £200 in the first week is pretty good relative to your campaign goal. Drinking games like this are pretty big in the US (cards against humanity, Kings, etc).

    Hi Salvador,

That's great advice, I will definitely take a look and post on other campaigns. I have been on and off of a few already.

I am currently working on a video for my kickstarter. I should have a video for the end of the week!

That's brilliant to know, I'm based in the UK so a lot of the people I'm reaching first hand also reside here.

Thank you for all of the advice,

    Emma

That's exciting! Your right, they are pretty high quality/legit. Like I said before, this is a great product for people just entering college/university and getting to know each other. What kind of feedback have you received from people who play the game?

I am quite excited these have now arrived! I've been looking around for communities that would get students involved, I think it would really suit that market. It's all word of mouth at the moment. As well as looking for communities in the US that might be interested in this game. I'm finding that quite difficult at the moment. If anyone knows how I can get the word out to those communities, I'll be happy to give it a go. At the moment, I can only tell students in the UK because I know some.

As for feedback, I've had very sceptical people change their mind when they've played the game. I have had a lot of positive feedback from game players so far and these are the people that have suggested changes to the game which have been made to the new art work. I've been told it needs some simplifying but I have since added a symbol chart to the rules so this should help, that was down to which cards they had to hold on to and which ones they put back in the pack.

But overall a very positive crowd. I have more games tests coming up, with a lot more people and of different ages groups. I definitely think this is a game that would start off a night of drinking.

I'll be updating game play during my kickstarter and as my game tests go on too.

That's awesome! You're doing it! :). If I were in your position, I would focus the majority of my time on perfecting it for the UK student population. No doubt, there are cultural differences between the US and the UK, but if you can prove acceptance in the UK, 1. You'll have some money 2. You'll learn a lot about your customers before entering another market 3. It will be easier to form partnerships in other areas because you have a few testimonials.

On a tight budget, I would focus on building one or two strong relationships with people in the US that can introduce it to the student population and get some initial feedback before entering the marketplace in a larger way. Maybe this can be from UK students you know who have studied abroad in the US and made friends or from someone you met online who is in the US and interested in entrepreneurship from YE forums or Teen business forum.

How long does a game generally last and how many games do people want to play?

This is brilliant advice, you've definitely given me areas to focus on and hone first. Thank you! (I am in the process of emailing student unions in the UK to see if there is a possibility of telling students about the campaign, otherwise I am relying on recent graduates to help me spread the word.)

On a night playing the game, you would only play it once to start events off and it is much better to play with 5/6+ players. There is no ending to the game so players can choose when the game ends for them. I am always looking at game play and this is a very good area to ask my backers for feedback. Whether they would like structure or are happy to be left to their own devices.

On my games test so far, we have played the game for most of the night and players are very eager to meet up to play again.

    Emma.

Interesting. Keep me updated on any things you learn from running the campaign or from test groups :).

Lots of updates with will be on their way soon! The first of which is a kickstarter video at the top of the page. Duration around 2 minutes.

    Check it out here: http://kck.st/13SksBg

I have had 2 more games tests, 1 group aging 23 - 70 and another aging 20 - 25. I have had quite a bit of feedback from both groups which will help to improve game play. Considering adding a rules DVD/youtube video and alternate ways of playing the game. I'll keep you posted.

    Thanks,
    Emma
