That is a cool decentralised way of moderation. Just got to find the right subreddits for things and it seems like a really useful resource.

My first reddit account was over 6 years old and my current one is 4 years old.

Reddit is HUGE, it is like a huge underwater creature that is right under the surface of the internet that most people do not realize is even there. If you see a viral video on Facebook or a news site, chances are--it was from the home page of reddit, The community is very inward--you will here references to "what is in the safe" or "poor Colby." Heck, most people on reddit now do not remember "disco ball. There was a redditor named Wadsworth who said that most videos on the internet could be fast forwarded by 30 percent and no information would be lost. This became known as the Wadsworth Constant. You may see references to Unidan and his fall from grace. . .if you are confused just open a tab and go to the website "Know Your Meme" and find the reference--it will be there most of the time. Do not look up what happened to poor Colby, you will be changed for life. And I am not even going to mention about the ***box, this forum is not the right place for that,

I suggest you create two accounts. One will be the account you peruse reddit with. Get to know the locals, comment on threads and start drilling down. The "alt" account will be the one centered on your campaign/business.

The "real" reddit is in subreddits. If you want your mind blown just Google this:" What are the most interesting subreddits?" Go to one of the threads and start searching and clicking links. Some subreddits have members that just use that sub. Imgur was created by a redditor and some people just use Imgur to look at pics, some maybe never even going on reddit.

I am sure there will be several subs focused on your campaign's world. Look on the sidebar and read that community's rules. Then jump in and have fun! You can promote your campaign on the different Kickstarter and Crowdfunding focused subreddits.

Here is the warning.

Let us say you have an amazing new bicycle pump. You have posted a few times on >> http://www.reddit.com/r/bicycling/
and decide to post something about your campaign. You probably will be told not to spam. Heck, let us say some viral video crops up based around a Geico commercial. Someone will link to http://www.reddit.com/r/HailCorporate and claim it was just an ad, dig into the user who submitted the link and claim it was all a conspiracy to get Geico to the front page.

You have to be creative. You could just mention that you are new to reddit, even ask if you should or could post a link. IT all depends on you and if you are part of the community and the mods of the subreddit. Who knows, there could be no big deal with posting a link--again, it all depends on the sub your campaign would fit best with.

The thing about reddit is that it is just another social network. You will soon find like minded souls, who know other social networks and by those connections you may find the best way to get word out about your campaign.

Oh, and dropping "I am here for Rampart" into most threads will make the locals smile and hug you like a lost long brother

I remember going on there years ago...after reading your post, I'm going to try it again. It's one of those social networks that make me feel like either I'm in a maze or a riot.

My friends in college always went on Reddit but I never saw the need to check it out.

Now that I am using it as social media for my business I have come to learn and know the intricacies of Reddit and it really is quite fun. Think of any random obscure interest/topic and you will find a community of like-minded people.

It is a really cool community because of the anonymity which eliminates censoring and authority in a sense.

Ive been on reddit for four years or so and made an account about 3 years ago.

Reddit is awesome and terrible.
You must make an account so you can control what you see. You have to subscribe th the subreddits that you want.

The smaller subreddits usually have a much better feel, interaction and content but less people.

The larger subreddits have tons of people, lots of nonsense jokes in the comments and a lot of regurgitated information.

Anyway, Marketing to reddit is hard. Posting your own content rarely goes well. Reddit hates to be advertised to. They have paid localized ads and ive seen some do well and many do poorly. I will try it when my time is right.

With all that being said. There is a ton of great info on reddit in the subjects that you are passionate about. try to get involved and see what happens.

So from March 1 to March 9 we averaged about $477 per day and things were going really well and very steady for us. At this point, we already reached our first 6 stretch goals and was about $500 away from the Oculus Rift stretch goal and the next day it just exploded. We woke up to find hundreds of emails. It turns out we ended up on the front page of Reddit from a gif that someone had made.

We were over 500% funded and down to the last few days. But the day never ended. It just kept going and going. We participated on the Reddit thread, kept posting about it on other threads and then boom, we got on the front page AGAIN.

It's also a pretty big traffic driver, though Redditors are notoriously fast browsers, so the traffic can bounce (not convert).

The important thing is to build up your karma or get someone to help out who has an established face in one of the subreddits. You could also reach out to redditors and even ask for advice. See the reddit 101 guide: http://www.reddit.com/wiki/reddit_101

If you have articles that have written about your project, those might be best to share rather than your project itself. You can also ask feedback from redditors on your project.

As with most things, developing a foothold early will pay dividends down the road for other business initiatives or projects you are launching in the future.

Thanks for these tips and also for sharing a link to that helpful article Salvador. Although I've been working online now for 18 years I'm also new to Reddit believe it or not and am only now (for the past few weeks) just beginning to take the time to learn about it. Reddit is definitely in a league of its own and I found out very quickly how strict their rules are. I guess like many things there's just a bit of a learning curve to it at first.

I think Reddit is an incredibly valuable resource, it used and approached properly.

You need to approach Reddit like you would a stranger you want to befriend. Be super pushy and they will push you away. Really you only need to be friendly and positive. Participate in thread outside of your own. Like mentioned earlier, build your karma, that's you reputation. Make friends and you your project will be gladly received.

Really Reddit it just like building any other following. It's slow and takes work, but it can really pay off. Big time.
