Edgar Allan Poe's "The Gold Bug" - A Short Film

A suspenseful adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s short story, set near Charleston, SC in 1843 about buried pirate treasure.

We have spent months assembling our story and our crew, and we are almost ready to go - We just need your help!

The money that we raise will help our department heads perform the skills they have been honing for years. The following is where the money you donate will be going and how it helps the movie get made:

Over half the movie takes place outside at night, deep in the forest. In order to evoke the mood of Poe and achieve the style of lighting this film requires, our Director of Photography, Jeremy Peele, will be renting some lights that we cannot get for free from our college, Savannah College of Art and Design. Also needed is a very large, diesel-fueled generator to run the lights.

Because our film is a period piece, we must make sure that everything on screen is historically accurate. If something from the modern day sneaks into the shot, the movie magic is shattered. Carolyn Shannon, our Production Designer, is responsible for all of the props and set dressing. Most of our props will be authentic, period pieces bought at antique stores to ensure the production design is accurate and of the utmost quality. However, our most important prop, the Gold Bug itself, must be custom made and requires the hiring of professional Designer/Sculptor Michael Allday.

We have also hired an industry Hair/Make-Up artist and a professional Blood Effects artist (Black Tie FX) so that our fake blood won’t look fake. This is a drama, not a comedy.

Certified Actor Combatant Kegan Crawford (Society of American Fight Directors), is our Stunt Coordinator. He is responsible for training our actors and/or stunt doubles to fight safely during the fight scenes in our film. One scene involves our character climbing a tree. In order to accomplish this, we are hiring a 4 person belay team to ensure our actor/stunt double can perform their jobs safely.

We have chosen to hire actors from the Screen Actors Guild because trained and experienced actors give better performances than non-professionals. We will need to pay our actors and their stand-ins to travel to our filming locations and for their lodging during production.

Luckily, we will be filming near some of the same locations that appear in Poe’s short story. We will need to pay fees to use our island locations around Savannah, GA and our inland locations in Columbus, GA. We will also need to pay a few of our crew to travel from Atlanta, GA to some of our locations across the state, as well as the expenses that traveling incurs , e.g., Gas, meals.

A fed crew is a happy crew, and a happy crew is a good crew! During production, we will be working the industry standard 12 hour work day. Meals on set and experience are all we will be working for, so we are making sure to provide our crew with hearty, healthy meals and refreshing beverages so their time spent on set is worthwhile and rewarding.

    Risks and challenges

A lot of hands are needed to make a film. Having to rely on so many individuals to put in 100% can be risky, but that is what makes us a team. We have carefully selected our crew members to ensure the project is created by capable, caring hands in every department so that the final product is filled with quality and love; attributes that definitely show on screen.

Our vision is to create an excellent film in every aspect: from directing, to cinematography, acting, costumes, locations, make-up, music, editing, and everything in between. Our Producers, D.B. Lloyd, Chris Johnson, Kayla Jane Adams, and Reshena Burch have been working for months to assemble the pieces. Their combined experience, passion, and dedication to this project has formed the solid foundation that is needed to bring a film of this scope to life.

    Your help is greatly appreciated!
