Absolutely, Kickstarter bars project Creators from backing their own campaign. At the same time, Kickstarter gives wriggle room by permitting (indeed encouraging) family and friends to chip in. So, when up a creek with the click ticking, you can coax cousin Karen or brother Brandon to increase their pledge. You'll give it back in 2 weeks when Amazon cuts you a virtual check, right?

If it's the difference between funding or not, and only represents a small portion of the total funding, and you have someone who is willing to let you pay them back? I've heard of this happening and honestly, it wouldn't bother me if I were a backer. It would be a shame to lose 95% of your funding just because you couldn't come up with the final 5%.

I wouldnt do 4k of 10k as that *-10% adds up. 1k or less I would do on a 10k goal.

Yeah, 4k of 10k out of your own pocket is too much and would defeat the purpose of the crowd funding.

But I'm all for it if there's only a small percentage left to be funded and you're running out of time, such as in SoftTempest's story. That's tough if Kickstarter finds it unethical. They should provide a flexible funding option like what Indiegogo has, where you can choose to keep what you earned without reaching funding goal, instead of the all-or-nothing model. There've been so many projects in the past that were close to their funding goal, but didn't make it due to a small percentage unfunded. Kickstarter must lose a lot of revenue with projects like these

If you're willing to kick in your own money, just set a goal that is your real minimum.

Don't forget you lose 8-10% of all pledges in fees (5% to Kickstarter and a further 3-5% in payment processing) so if you have someone back the project on your behalf it's literally costing you money.

Kickstarter's all-or-nothing approach is designed to ensure that if the project goes ahead it has a good chance of succeeding because you managed to raise the money you said you needed. Anything less could be seen as jeopardising the project and the interests of the backers.

I would see how it does and if it's not successful try another platform that offers flexible goal funding like Indiegogo.

Our project is on day three and only at 1%, it's nerve-wracking but once you're committed you just have to do everything you can to promote it and hope it succeeds.

If you can pledge for 4k in your own 10k project, why are you asking for 10k in the first place?
Just ask for 6k as that's what you need.
