can anyone advise best site to promote project without spamming for free.
not sure best way to approach it and have mainly been doing facebook/twitter statuses and getting friends to promote as well.
Any advice is appreciated

One thing I would say on this is you have to be in my opinion aggressive on the marketing, but also as you mentioned not spam. Get the right mix will be the best for your project! I agree with a previous comment that Reddit would be an excellent place to start! -

Do a simple search for social bookmarking sites and you can find loads of resources to post your site.
