I think it's perfectly respectable to accept pledges from family members (c'mon, who else is going to give me money?), and it might even instill confidence in potential backers if they think my project might actually be funded.
What do all you experienced Kickstarters think? Should my father pledge early or wait until later?

I checked out your project page and it actually seems like a very good idea. We host backpackers and travelers all the time on our land through sites like workaway and helpx and there is definitely an audience for a book on traveling. I agree with @Charles that the Kickstarter video is not as captivating as your page itself or your facebook but I do believe in your project. I will try to share with others. But do not be discouraged and don´t pay attention to any negative feedback with regards to your dad pledging. There is nothing wrong with your parents supporting you, at any juncture in your life, and it is commendable that he is choosing to do so. March forward with your head held high and let your dad support his daughter. You both must have a wonderful relationship. Best of luck with your Kickstarter! =]
