I think it also depends on the size of investment you are seeking. For a modest sum (from the standard of equity based crowdfunding platform) that I am raising for my venture https://www.PlannedDeparture.com - I didn't find the usefulness of PR companies. However, I know others who were raising significant money through crowdfunding platforms and they found PR companies and the value they brought to the campaign invaluable.

From the research I've done, I would tend to agree with the above. I have seen a few reports though of hired PR companies that had little to no effect on the success of the campaign. Can you recommend any ways to evaluate if a specific company would work for my particular campaign?

I had the same experience too. We are in the middle of our Kickstarter campaign, call Pit and Paddock.

Within a day of our Kickstarter campaign, we have had about four "experts" telling us they can help get our project exceed our goals. We felt that they were scammers and chose to ignore them. Thank you for the advice, sbriggman.
