Project means project. It doesn't matter that what subject or topic it has. Someone make this project and investing money for getting money through. But one thing I want to say that anyone should launch a project with some new topic. And if he will create a campaign for it on kickstarter, he will definitely get success.

I think if anything, it proves that crowd funding works. Because it was a simplistic comical campaign, it spread like wildfire. That proves that any of us, with any idea, can be successful. If the potato salad guy did it, so can you.

Also I think it garnered more media attention and probably more a boost in general activity to kickstarter websites, which is never a bad thing

Id love to know what percentage were new to Kickstarter and if they keep track?

I think others have said this.. it was publicity for KickStarter... however, it really irritates me (as well as other creators) when we are busting our behinds, trying to figure out every possible way to reach any backer that we can, to proceed with our dreams as a business... and this guy goes out and basically gets handed $54,000 for a JOKE.

My goal is $7000... which is 7 times less than he got. If I could raise that kind of cash, I would throw a HUGE cookout for whoever could attend.. not to mention really be able to set the wheels of my business in motion. My goal is the bare minimum of what I need to get started.. there will still be a lot of my own money and time invested once the prerequisites are out of the way, such as marketing, and actually getting stores to carry it.

As the saying goes.. even bad publicity is good.
But sometimes it can hurt others.

Yeah I was disappointed because my first project was great, helped only the community, and it never received funding, yet this guy with potato salad basically gets rich. Oh the humanity!

It is interesting to read through such a collection of sour grapes.

The guy who posted the KickStarter about making potato salad had no way of knowing, ahead of time, that his project would go viral. He sought to raise ten bucks.

So, what does the potato salad campaign say about Kickstarter?

It says that KickStarter works - and that it can work in spades. It simply provides no guarantees of such.

It says that goals can be achieved - and exceeded.

It says that critical mass can be achieved.

It says that projects can go viral.

It says that momentum can perpetuate itself.

It says that people who fund projects have a sense of humor, and that sometimes (not always, but just sometimes), they will simply go along with an obvious joke. It says that the joke is NOT on KickStarter.

It says that you should focus, because KickStarter didn't fund the potato salad project. Rather, almost seven thousand individuals did.

Some projects on KickStarter raise vastly greater sums of money than $55,492. What it says is that KickStarter can be a path towards fulfillment - of either a dream or a joke.

The bulk of the KickStarter project pages that I have waded through are exercises in minimal effort. A great bulk of them demonstrate less thought than some guy who made a joke that others opted to transform into a staggering reality.

It says that there is power in numbers, and that people from all walks of life can come together to take an ordinary idea and turn it into something extraordinary.

Comedian Ron White has a comedy routine predicated upon, of all things, the concept of Tater Salad. Hell, his website's domain name is TaterSalad.com. Thus, Zack Brown isn't the first person to capitalize upon the concept of potato salad. He's just the most recent.

I don't know of anyone who makes good potato salad using sour grapes, however.

In the beginning I thought it was a joke and low and behold this guy raised $55,000+. I just think these kinds of projects belittle Kickstarter. If you look they approved about 12 other potato salad projects - crazy. Makes you wonder how and why they got approved. Why do people promote these things?

I think it's good promotion for Kickstarter but it's also dangerous because the proliferation of this simple funny projects may take over much of the attention and result in worse odds for larger scaled projects.
