Although you crushed your goal, I'd like to get your opinion on what you think causes most campaigns to fail. Marketing? Preparation? Cost?

Hmm It's really hard to say as it can be a number of things. In my opinion, first and foremost, is the product you're making something that will appeal to a lot of people? Research definitely needs to be done first. Proper testing and getting feedback from those around you can help. Then after that , you have to make sure your Kickstarter is setup properly. If it's a game, do you have a demo people can try out? If it's a product, do you have prototypes or anything to show in the video? What kinds of rewards are you offering people? Have you thought beyond that to your stretch goals? If you get past that part, then the most important thing is to be active throughout the ENTIRE Kickstarter. Some people think the Kickstarter will just do its thing on its own and that's not true. Maybe it's true for those already well known and big companies that are doing this, but for lesser knowns and newbies, it's about being proactive.

Show your backers that you care! Respond to people who ask questions in a timely manner, thank your backers for their support. Don't over update - once a day or every couple days is good enough! Plan where you are going to promote your products FIRST. Don't wait until the Kickstarter is already live. If you are Kickstarting a game and are hoping to get on Steam, do your Greenlight and Kickstarter at the same time.

Our Kickstarter campaign was essentially a full time job. That was our main focus the entire month and even when it got discouraging at times, we never gave up. Every day we promoted, we always tried to come up with new places and new ways to promote. We didn't spend any money on advertising, although we almost considered it, but realized it just wasn't worth it. Create press releases and send them out to everyone in your field.

There's lots to do, it's a ton of work and it's exhausting. But if you really want it, you have to make it work!
