+1 for GM Dave's idea. I'm having the same experience with my first campaign. Is there an area in KS where we can provide this suggestion?

The link to "shady guy" is gone. When I launched, I was contacted by several people with similar messages. At first it's that glimmer at hope than a pissed realization that it's a scam. I had one guy contact me and I asked for his website and he stated, "give me your email and I'll be in touch."

Within minutes (literally) of launch, I started to get spammed in email and in my KS inbox with emails from 'founders and CEOs.' With the exception of Kickstartmyads, who are discussed elsewhere in the forums, they were offering about the same thing at about the same price point, starting with a $150 'basic DIY' press package...on looking at it, it looked like there really wasn't anything in there I couldn't easily do myself. They'll send you a 'press release template'? I'm sure those are all over the web for free. They'll 'email your press release to contacts?' Translation - they'll spam blast a huge not-very-vetted list of press aliases. Not worth $150 imho, especially considering this could be completely automated.

Also have gotten a lot of KS messages from creators wanting to swap $1 pledges. A lot of them begin with identical, clearly cut-and-pasted text. Often the projects have a very tenuous connection, or no connection at all, to mine. This is another idea I find of extremely dubious utility. ^^

They are preying on the weak, scared little Kickstarterers who don't know if they will get funded or not. That's what it feels at least, and they want someone to go, "Oh thank goodness! I can get help!" If I hadn't been scammed into a timeshare before, I might have thought about it. I am so wary of scams and promises now though.

One of the drawbacks of life in the age of internet — it generally makes things easier for everyone — unfortunately, that includes the scammers.

I didn't even know this type of scam happened! Does it happen a lot on campaigns? Thanks for the head's up!

I don't know, but I'd assume so. I have found the best way is to reach out to your friends and family and ask them to share and consider pledging. I don't know if we will make it, but it has been amazing all the same. It took a lot of hard work, and LONG hours at the computer, and totally worth it
