Great points! I was delighted when my own project, Asphodel: A Mythic Space Opera (listed under "Comic Books"), was recently named a Staff Pick, and I suspect it had a lot to do with what you're suggesting.

Almost a week in, one backer, little prospect for more, and I am following all the advice I can (afford to) online. Unfortunately, as a startup with all my funds going toward our initial product, we have nothing to spare to pay for publicity on all these sites that offer it. I am tweeting and facebooking and emailing and using images, and pretty much everything I can do for free. Unfortunately I just can't seem to get anyone's attention. Any tips on what to do then? I just can't afford to spend money on the project, and I hesitate to even consider it if I don't know it will yield any useful results.
