I would think that it's helpful in the idea that if you build up a decent amount of people that you know will back your project you can get that incredible jump on Day 1 compared to projects not getting that huge of a boost. While it may or may not help out in the long run, it still has a benefit in some way.

The reason for build-up is making sure you'll be at least 30% funded on day 1(https://crushcrowdfunding.com/the-exac ... o-launch/), to get attention, so the algorithm likes your campaign, and so other people feel inclined to back since they'll see you already have backers.

Now, how lucky your campaign has already so many people asking to buy the product NOW. This is NOT THE CASE for many campaigns. For a lot of projects, people have to spend a lot of time finding their audience online, and teaching them about early adopter mindset and crowdfunding.

Most campaigns need to spend a lot of time marketing, going to conventions, running ads, and twitching their target audience.

Also, someone mentioned the opportunity to have feedback on your content. This is so true. It's a resource a lot of creators take for granted, but pre-launch is a good time to see people's responses and engage in conversations with them.
