Having started a Kickstarter campaign (which failed, unfortunately) purely as an experiment from nothing, I learned a good amount:
1) Have as much as possible secured beforehand. As unrealistic as it sounds, try to hit your goal on day 1, everything else is a bonus.
2) Prepare everything ahead of time. Running a Kickstarter is a full-time job, and you don't want to cut into your campaign time by preparing updates, fixing anything broken (like a website, or digital download), filming, etc.
3) Communicate early and often. People want to see that you care about your product. Fortunately, I knew this the first time, and because of that, my original backers are still on board with what I want to make.
