    US vs European backers

    by Timwes » Sat Aug 22, 2015 12:48 pm

    Hello everyone,

We have recently launched our campaign for the NEXT 1.0 filament extruder.
    https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/3devo/next-10-next-level-filament-extruder
A device that allows you to create your own 3d printing filament, at a fraction of the cost of buying your filament. Creating a new level of freedom in creating unlimited 3d prints.
Also it gives you the possibility to experiment with new material compositions, and recycle waste plastics into something new!

We are located in the Netherlands (yes that country with Amsterdam in it). Our company consist mostly of engineers, so launching this kickstarter was quite a lesson in how to market a product. And are now working day and night to get us true this Kickstarter campaign. But the simple fact is that we are lacking experience on this area so we hope to gain some by your advice!

As for this i have a question for all of you, we know that Kickstarter is a crowdfunding platform that is internationally used but is extremely popular in the US. At this moment we have the majority of our backers coming from Europe and a few from Asia, but almost none from the US. On the other hand our google analytics tells us that the vast majority of our visitors to both the website and the kickstarter page are US located?
My guess would be that a lot of people on this forum are US located, we would be very grateful if you can take a look at our campaign? And possible give us feedback what the reason might be that our US backers vs European backers are so low?

    Thank you very much!

    Timwes,

Thanks for sharing your project. It's an interesting dilemma which I too will face when I launch my UK based campaign in October.

You've said that the further you move from your location, the fewer backers there are for your project. Just on that point alone, here are my thoughts which I hope will be of interest:

    1. Postage costs. You've explained why they are not listed but not knowing how much this unit will cost to ship will cause concern. Multiply the distance, multiply the concern.

    2. Import taxes/duties. When you're buying/selling across trade boundaries there is additional complexity - how many of your potential backers have imported this type/class of machine before? I'd guess not many which will create more concern.

My advice - work hard to reduce areas of friction/concern as far as possible. And yes, I know...all of the above is a right pain to work through!

Good luck with the remainder of the KS and congratulations on already gaining more than $18k of support - it's an awesome product and you've put together a very good campaign.

    Ben @foldflat
